Thimphu, Parofrom $200–$25000
Hand-painted Buddhist scroll paintings on canvas, blessed by monks.
About
Thangkas are Tibetan/Bhutanese Buddhist paintings used as meditation aids. A serious thangka can take 6 months to 2+ years to paint, with natural pigments (gold, lapis lazuli, cinnabar) on cotton or silk canvas.
Authentic thangkas are painted in monasteries or licensed workshops. Prices range from USD $200 for a small machine-printed thangka to USD $25,000+ for a large hand-painted masterwork with consecrated gold leaf.
⚠️ **Export note:** Religious art older than 100 years cannot legally leave Bhutan. Any reputable shop will provide an export certificate.
