About Punakha Drubchen & Tshechu
A back-to-back double festival at the spectacular Punakha Dzong. The Drubchen re-enacts the 17th-century victory over Tibetan invaders — a rare religious-cum-historical drama. Followed immediately by the regular Punakha Tshechu.
Highlights
- Pazap warrior re-enactment (unique to Punakha)
- Serda procession to the river
- Thongdrel unveiling on final day
- Spring jacaranda blooms as backdrop
Why attend
The only Bhutanese festival with a military-theatrical re-enactment. Punakha Dzong at the river confluence is arguably Bhutan's most beautiful fortress.
Planning tips
- Warmer than Paro/Thimphu in Feb — still bring layers for Dochula pass
- Stay 2 nights in Punakha to see both halves
- Lovely combined with a Dochula pass morning
